Strontium is a mineral that is present in foods and drinking water, depending on the soil content. At the end of this study, the women who took strontium (with calcium and vitamin D) over the three year time frame noticed an increase in bone density and were far less likely to have vertebral fractures after the study. The other group showed no improvements.
Dr. Harry K. Genant, executive director of the Osteoporosis and Arthritis Research Group at UC San Francisco, and the advisor of the study, said that "In its favor, strontium is easily absorbed, safe and free of the side effects associated with some osteoporosis therapies."
Precautions
Women who are pregnant or nursing should always talk with a physician before beginning strontium supplementation (or any new supplementation of any kind).
If you are a person taking a prescription osteoporosis product, it is important you do not stop taking it to instead take strontium supplementation. If you'd like to add the mineral to your regimen, our advice would be to make sure you have a word with your doctor first.
Strontium has been known to cause diarrhea in some people who consume high doses of this mineral.
